Jo Sellam PgDip Fine Art, Art TherapySTR
I have been working with sandplay therapy and art therapy with primary and secondary learners who have been excluded from mainstream education.
The children liked the sand play however the progress they have made began to unravel as the school went through some turbulent times. I witnessed how the children were unable to engage when a safe and protected environment was absent. There was a high incidence of assaults and injuries, teachers were stressed and many left for better employment.
The school is one of a national group of schools providing alternative education to mainstream schools. It is run by a private academy which is finding itself in financial difficulties. The Academy recently closed its entire therapy service making 15 therapists redundant, myself included. I am currently seeking new work as a school art therapist.
